[UI] Diagram Editor / Model Navigator: Make renaming elements more comfortable
Currently, renaming a model element in the Diagram Editor or the Model Navigator requires up to three clicks
- Select model element
- Raise Properties / or annotation view
- Click into “Name” property
- Now the name can be edited
The behavior should be changed to reduce the number of clicks / UI interactions. This could be implemented as follows:
- Definition of UI actions to directly enable editing the element’s
name. Ideas:
- Context menu entry “Rename”
- Key binding “F2”
- Mouse gesture (e.g., long click with left mouse button).
- The above UI actions should trigger either of the following:
- Properties / or annotation view and give the focus the name property.
- Optional (and more difficult): Change Diagram Editor and Model Navigator to edit the name directly in the diagram view / the tree editor, i.e. (temporarily) change the text label to an text input field
- For both solutions, it might be more intuitive if the old name is selected when the user triggers the edit operation, so the user can immediately start to type the new name. The arrow / home / end keys provide a convenient way to change an existing name.
